ZimmerFrei is a collective of artists whose complex practice is located on the crossways of cinema, theater, music and performance. Melting formal languages, the group produces kaleidoscopic sonic and visual works that investigate real and imaginary urban environments, where the mental and the physical coalesce in a coherent narrative of human experience. Their video installation in three chapters, Ghost Track , offers a phantom-like journey through Europe and its geopolitical landscape, while using the charismatic, acoustic power of the soundtracks from classical films, by Hitchcock and Coppola thorough Scott, Chereau, Ferrara and Von Trier. ZimmerFrei reviews the precarious construction of identity on the border of fiction and reality, between imagination and the existing condition of a society in transformation, by generating an alternative, fetish-like universe of ghostly images, a projection of memories and collective consciousness, triggered by cinematic illusion and desire. Such is ZimmerFrei’s specific translation of Hitchcock’s portrayal of identity disorder in Vertigo and Von Trier’s hypnotic therapy of national confusion in Europa . This is a particular version of the synthesis of social, cultural and political disunity, able to generate visions of porous cities and hybrid territories of beyond-state status. Ghost Track constructs a mirrored surface where the vernacular is reflected as a global residue of collective experience, and the sense of belonging enters the expanded field of all available cultural heritages.
