Barbora Klimova’s work is primarily related to the semantics of a place. It functions as a balanced environment where a hyper-fertile field of cross-references overlaps with the artist’s very subjective and unique approach to the spatial limitations of a frame. Sometimes small shifts and deflections in what we could call normal, result in new situations, rendered at the fragile borderline of transparency. Additionally, in her performances, texts and publications, the artist explores the framework of cultural history, architectural theory, urbanism, anthropology and sociology.
In her most recent project, Klimova is interested in the perception of public space and its transformation within the former and a new political landscape of Czechoslovakia / Czech Republic. Replaced-2006-Brno is based upon reconstructions of five performances by distinguished Czech artists (Karel Miler, Vladimír Havlík, Petr Štembera, Jirˇí Kovanda and Jan Mlcˇoch) that took place in various public spaces in Czechoslovakia in the 1970s and 1980s. The artist documented the restaged performances using a hidden camera and conducted conversations with all the artists, in which the experience of an original performance was articulated and confronted with a new situation. Klimova’s archive of remakes questions not only the uniqueness of those artifacts displayed, but also thoroughly analyses the sovereignty and legality of the use of public space.
