By using the simplest tools and materials – predominantly paper and cardboard – Michał Budny creates restrained models not only of objects, places and situations, but also of some ephemeral phenomena which do not have solid material forms, such as voices, memories, rain or a ray of sunlight. Budny’s meticulously constructed sculptures, tiny objects, monumental installations and site-specific works function as an echo and/or a negative version of reality and at the same time, they narrate a discreet story about transitoriness, fading and the disappearance. The artist’s installations deal with the ideas of absence and emptiness, thus generating powerful feelings of nostalgia and melancholy. His new installations, River and Tree look at the primordial qualities of time and space. Budny is interested in rendering aspects that are nonsolid, fleeting, temporary and changeable: the shadow cast by a tree, wind blowing in branches, the surface of a river and the leaves floating in the current. What is physically suspended belongs to the realm of imagination, while frailty operates as surprisingly solid foundation of memory and knowledge.
