Heide Hinrichs inhabits a world of pregnant ambiguity and contradiction, in a perpetual state of controlled eruption. The artist is a storyteller and her repertoire consists of momentary flashes of past emotions, hidden mental states and half-uttered gestures. These are arranged carefully, although sometimes they appear to be spontaneous anthologies of parables and allegoric verses. Her formal equilibrium includes the charming and precise mastering of different shapes and materials, along with a rare combination of both post-minimal and neo-baroque stylistics. Textures and volumes, scale and colors, contribute to a tactile, multi-sensory experience. Hinrichs invents imaginary topographies peopled by her favorite personages, a place where childhood memories can collide with the wounds of maturity, where the carnivalesque conspires with the scientific, helping her navigate through vernacular landscapes filled with hope and expectation. Her Expected Obedience of Your Thoughts is a voluminous installation composed of a variety of fragmentary, excavation-style trophies made from clay, rubber, tissue, papier maché and wood. It is like a cocoon containing an identity which is transitory and ephemeral, a capsule of a time yet to come. Appropriating a style similar to an ethnographic cabinet de curiosité , Hinrichs creates an environment of psychic anticipation: new suns appear on a horizon and a falling star constitutes an existence hurtling to an unknown future. This melancholic state, suspended between the void and plenty, takes on a therapeutic aspect when dealing with loss, memory and the traumas of subjective history.
