Social Art Praxis presents the material actions of three artistic collectives that grew out of a course in exhibition studies run by Cornelia Lauf at the IUAV, a radical and inter-disciplinary institution that emphasizes strong collaboration between art, design, architecture and fashion.
Airswap , Aspra.mente and Publink are concerned with the use of natural and man-made resources. This involves the recycling of materials we now consider disposable, aiming to increase awareness about consumption, the use of fashion and the reality of local agricultural situations. Each collaboration is based upon local and regional networking and it utilizes a strong aesthetic dimension. Airswap investigates the fashion system, re-designing existing clothes at special mobile kiosks that are a solution to throwaway culture of consumer fashion. Aspra.mente sees its politics in the realm of agriculture. For Manifesta 7, they have chosen to champion the culinary and ecological terrain of the wild blueberry through an aesthetic agit-prop program. Publink approaches the issue of recycling personal goods, incorporating the re-use and collecting structures provided by civic municipalities. Transmitting an ethical and utopian spirit and focusing on local communities, their identities and sense of belonging, Lauf’s participatory and performative project of Social Art Praxis oscillates between the idea of social sculpture and remodeling the relationships between ecology, politics and culture.
