Die schwarzen Bänder erstrecken sich über die gesamten 12 Höhenmeter des Gebäudes, bis zu wenigen Millimetern über den Boden, und bilden einen gigantischen vertikalen Block. Sie hängen an fast unsichtbaren dünnen Angelschnüren, die eine freie Rotation ermöglichen, so dass ihre Breite sich ständig verändert, von einem halben Zoll zu mikro-dünn. Die Bewegungen der Besucherinnen und Besucher im Raum beleben die Bänder: Sie erscheinen, verschwinden, überlagern sich optisch und reflektieren das Licht der Umgebung. _Skylight Tower_ erscheint wie ein stabiles, gigantisches Monument – gleichzeitig löst es sich im Raum auf, schmilzt dahin, ist anfällig und flüchtig wie Dunst oder eine Erinnerung. Abgespultes Videoband und elektrische Ventilatoren sind ein wiederkehrendes Element der Installationen von Zilvinas Kempinas, die faszinierende visuelle Rätsel erschaffen. So z. B die Arbeit _Flying Tape_ (2004), die einen raumgroßen Ring aus Videoband auf den Luftströmungen eines Kreises von Ventilatoren schweben ließ, oder _White Noise_ (2007), die eine monumentale, kinetische Wand aus „weißem Rauschen“ nachbildete. An existing architectural element of a former aluminum factory – a skylight – is “projected” down on to the concrete floor by numerous strips of unspooled videotape. Taking up all 12 meters of the building’s height, the black lines stop just a few millimeters above the floor, to form one giant, vertical block. They hang from thin, invisible fishing wire, allowing each strip to rotate freely, so that they constantly change in width, varying from half an inch wide to micro thin, animated by the motion of viewers in space, disappearing and reappearing, optically overlapping and reflecting light from their surroundings. _Skylight Tower_ appears stable and gigantic as a monument. At the same time it dissolves in space, melting away, vulnerable and ephemeral, like smoke or memory. The installations of Zilvinas Kempinas often use unspooled videotape and electric fans to conjure transfixing visual conundrums such as _Flying Tape_ (2004), which levitated a room-size loop of video tape on the air currents from a circle of fans, and _White Noise_ (2007), which recreated a monumental kinetic screen of “white noise” on a wall. Un lucernario, elemento architettonico di quella che era un’industria di alluminio è “proiettato” sul pavimento in cemento armato da numerosi nastri srotolati di videocassette. Scendendo per tutta l’altezza dei dodici metri dell’edificio, le linee nere si fermano solo a pochi millimetri dal pavimento e formano un gigantesco blocco verticale. Appeso grazie a un sottilissimo filo metallico da pesca, ogni nastro è libero di roteare, la sua larghezza cambia continuamente, passando da circa un centimetro e mezzo a uno spessore affilato; si anima col movimento degli spettatori nello spazio, scompare e riappare, si sovrappone e riflette la luce dell’ambiente circostante. _Skylight Tower_ sembra stabile e gigantesca come un monumento. Allo stesso tempo si dissolve nello spazio, svanisce, vulnerabile ed effimera come il fumo o la memoria. Le installazioni di Zilvinas Kempinas vengono spesso realizzate usando videonastri e ventilatori elettrici per un effetto visivo enigmatico e paralizzante, come nel caso di _Flying Tape_ (2004), un videonastro della grandezza di una stanza che gira in loop, fluttuando a causa delle correnti d’aria create dai ventilatori, e _White Noise_ (2007), la creazione di uno schermo cinetico monumentale di “rumore bianco” sul muro.
