516 TABULA RASA Denis Isaia, in conversation with Raqs Media Collective

Tabula Rasa – ein unbeschriebenes Blatt – ein Moment in Erwartung einer Präsenz, Aktion oder Einschreibung – ein Möglichkeitsraum, voller Erwartung, bereit für das Bevorstehende. Tabula Rasa ist ein besonderes Projekt der Manifesta 7 im Rahmen von „The Rest of Now“. Es möchte eine Reihe von Dialogen und Gesprächen mit den Einwohnerinnen und Einwohnern von Bozen und der Region anregen. Das Projekt wird über 111 Tage an einem, einfachen, langen Tisch – einem „unbeschriebenen Blatt“ – im leeren Raum 124 des ehemaligen Alumix-Gebäudes realisiert. Es besteht aus einzelnen Veranstaltungen, die verschiedene Arten des Zusammenfindens, Redens, Teilens, Sehens und gemeinsamen Erschaffens von Dingen zusammenführen. Die einzige Bedingung ist, dass jedes Event in einem leeren Raum an einem aufgeräumten Tisch beginnen muss. Die Veranstaltungen im Rahmen von Tabula Rasa umfassen Ausstellungen auf dem Tisch, Performances, Musik, Tanz, Theater, Film, Gespräche, Seminare, Workshops, Vorführungen, Experimente, Buchveröffentlichungen, Archivpräsentationen, Gartenarbeit und einige selbst organisierte Banketts. Der lange Tisch oder Tabula Rasa im Raum 124 wurde von Nikolaus Hirsch und Michel Müller entworfen. Radio Tandem FM98.4 in Bozen ist der Medienpartner des Projekts. Juli, 17:00 Uhr * *The Pirate as Archivist - Tools and Materials* Jan Gerber and Sebastian Lütgert Dieser Workshop ist eine Initiative gegen eine Kunstform, die Eigentum geworden ist. Heutzutage besteht der Traum vom Kino nicht länger aus Bildern, sondern aus abstrakten Rechten, die das Kino aus den Bildern ableitet: unbeschränktes geistiges Eigentum und dessen universeller Schutz. Konsequenterweise ist die einzige und interessanteste Tendenz im heutigen Kino – und gleichzeitig die einzige mit Zukunft - die Piraterie: die digitale Reproduktion und Neuverteilung der gesamten Kinogeschichte, spontan organisiert und weltweit. Diese Praxis kann als eine Art „Para-Design“ oder „Nach-Architektur“ betrachtet werden. Im Rahmen von „Informal Tabula Rasa“ lädt Tibaldi die Ausstellungsmitarbeiter in der ehemaligen Alumix-Fabrik – Aufseher, Pförtner, Führer und Kassenpersonal – dazu ein, parallel zum Tisch in Raum 124 eine Konstruktion aus unerwünschten Gegenständen und Materialien aus ihren Häusern und Wohnungen zu bauen. Diese Gesellschaft betrachtet die privaten und unveröffentlichten Reaktionen gewöhnlicher Besucherinnen und Besucher von Kunstevents als „Residuum“ zeitgenössischer Kunstausstellungen. „Guestbook: Mindmapping The Rest of Now” bittet Besucherinnen und Besucher um Reaktionen in Form von Anmerkungen, Kommentaren, Gedanken, Zeichnungen und Diagrammen auf „The Rest of Now“, die als „Mind Map“ – einem Schaubild konzeptueller Verbindungen und verwandter Interpretationen – in Raum 124 ausgestellt werden. August * *Radio Symphony: listening to global radio with local short-wave enthusiasts* Eine „Radiosymphonie” ist eine zufällige orchestrale Form, die durch das gleichzeitige Einstellen mehrerer Radiosender entsteht. 24 Transistorradios werden auf dem Tisch arrangiert und von jeweils auf die Frequenz einer Radiostation irgendwo auf der Welt eingestellt. Für jeden Tag der fünftägigen „Radiosymphonie“-Veranstaltung wird eine neue Liste von Stationen eingereicht. Wer am Tisch entlanggeht, denkt, jemand drehe am Senderwahlknopf eines gigantischen Radios. Er verwendet Grammofonplatten, Plattenteller, Teile von Verstärkern, Subwoofern usw. Die Herstellung des Instrumentariums setzt sich im Musizieren fort. Tabula Rasa – blank slate – a situation awaiting a presence, an act or an inscription – a space of potency, ripe with anticipation, ready for imminence. Tabula Rasa is a special project of Manifesta 7 within The Rest of Now. It is intended to animate a series of interactions and a network of conversations with the people of Bolzano / Bozen and the broader region. The project will be realized over 111 days on a long, clean table – a “blank slate” – in the empty space of Room 124 in the ex-Alumix building. It consists of a series of events embodying many modes of gathering, talking, sharing, viewing and making things together. The only condition is that each event must start in an empty room, on a clean table. The events featured in Tabula Rasa include table-top exhibitions and performances, music, dance, theatre, film, talks, seminars, workshops, demonstrations, experiments, book releases, archival presentations, gardening and the occasional self-organised banquet. Today, the dream of cinema no longer consists purely of images, but of the abstract rights that it claims to these images: infinite intellectual properties and their universal protection. In consequence, the single, most interesting tendency in cinema today - and the only one that holds a future - is piracy: the digital reproduction and redistribution of the entire history of cinema. It is organised spontaneously and on a world-wide level. This workshop is not only an attempt to increase the number and quality of movies in circulation, but also to increase the amount and quality of self-esteem among the individuals and organisations participating in various ways in this circulation. This practice could be considered a form of “para-design,” or “after-architecture.” In Informal Tabula Rasa, Tibaldi invites the people working in the ex-Alumix factory during the exhibition – guards, ushers, guides and ticket staff – to build a construction parallel to the long table in Room 124, using unwanted objects and materials from their homes. This construction is then rendered as a drawing, as a collective exercise in “after-architecture”. The drawing is exhibited along with the improvised, built form. It regards the responses of ordinary visitors to art events, usually private and unexpressed, as the “residue” of contemporary art exhibitions. Guestbook: Mind-mapping The Rest of Now will solicit responses from visitors to The Rest of Now in the form of annotations, comments, thoughts, drawings and diagrams, which will be displayed on a “Mind Map” – a chart of conceptual links and associated interpretations – to be exhibited in Room 124. Sunday, August 3 to Saturday, August 9 * *Radio Symphony: listening to global radio with local short-wave enthusiasts* A “radio symphony” is an accidental orchestral form created by simultaneously tuning-in to several radio stations. Twenty-four transistor radios will be arranged on the table, each tuned by a local, short-wave radio enthusiast, to the frequency of a radio station somewhere in the world. A fresh list of stations will be drawn up for each of the five days of the Radio Symphony event. The experience of walking along the table will be like listening to the turning dial of a giant radio. The visitor will be immersed in a constantly changing concert of sounds, voices, languages, music, static and radio-silence from all around the globe. Through direct contact with the audience, artist Milena Kosec explores issues of interpersonal interactions, randomness, immateriality, uniqueness of a moment, together with non-repeatability. In her performances she involves randomly chosen visitors, with whom she plays the role of the listener, establishing a spontaneous, sincere and personal dialogue. Without notes or documentation, the only traces these random conversations leave behind lay in the realm of personal memories. Tabula Rasa è una situazione in attesa di una presenza, un atto o una inscrizione – uno spazio in potenza, colmo di anticipazione, pronto all’imminenza. Tabula Rasa è un progetto speciale di Manifesta 7 all’interno di The Rest of Now. Tabula Rasa intende creare una serie di interazioni e una rete di conversazioni con la mostra stessa e il pubblico di Bolzano e della regione. Il progetto durerà 111 giorni e avrà luogo su un lungo tavolo sgombro, una “lastra pulita”, nello spazio vuoto della Stanza 124, nell’edificio dell’ex Alumix. L’unica condizione posta è che ogni progetto di Tabula Rasa debba partire all’interno della stanza vuota e sul tavolo pulito; attorno a questi due elementi si articolano una serie di eventi che rappresentano diverse modalità di incontro, sviluppando l’idea del dialogo, della condivisione, e della dimensione collettiva del creare e interpretare. Gli eventi presentati a Tabula Rasa includono mostre e performance, musica, danza, teatro, film, conversazioni, seminari, workshop, dimostrazioni, esperimenti, presentazioni di libri, di archivi, giardinaggio e banchetti occasionali organizzati dai presenti. La lunga tavola, o Tabula Rasa, nella Stanza 124, è stata disegnata da Nikolaus Hirsch e Michel Müller. Radio Tandem FM98.4 di Bolzano è il media partner del progetto Tabula Rasa. Denis Isaia vive a Bolzano, è curatore indipendente e assistente curatore dei Raqs Media Collective per The Rest of Now. Sabato 19 luglio, ore 17 * *The Pirate as Archivist - Tools and Materials* Jan Gerber and Sebastian Lütgert Questo workshop è un’iniziativa contro una forma d’arte diventata esclusiva. Oggi, il sogno del cinema non consiste più solo di immagini, ma di diritti astratti che esso rivendica su tali immagini: sulla loro tutela universale di proprietà intellettuali illimitate. Di conseguenza, la sola e più interessante tendenza nel cinema d’oggi, la sola che ha un futuro, è la pirateria: la riproduzione digitale e la ridistribuzione dell’intera storia del cinema, organizzatasi spontaneamente su scala globale. Questo workshop è un tentativo di aumentare il numero e la qualità dei film in circolazione, ma anche di riconoscere il valore dell’attività di coloro - individui e organizzazioni - che, secondo diverse modalità, partecipano a questa distribuzione. Domenica 20 luglio e lunedì 21 luglio, ore 17 * *In the Greenhouse* Una esposizione di giardineria a cura di Martina Schullian, Bolzano Da martedì 22 a domenica 27 luglio * *Informal Tabula Rasa* A workshop in “after-architecture” animated by Eugenio Tibaldi, Naples Un workshop in “architettura del dopo” promosso da Eugenio Tibaldi, Napoli Eugenio Tibaldi, artista residente a Napoli, si interessa alla pratica comune nell’Italia del Sud di “regolarizzare” le costruzioni informali e illegali con progetti architettonici retrospettivi. Questa prassi potrebbe essere definita una forma di “para-disegno”, o “architettura del dopo”. In Informal Tabula Rasa, Tibaldi invita coloro che lavorano nell’industria ex-Alumix durante la mostra: guardie, uscieri, guide e personale all’entrata, a costruire una struttura, parallela al lungo tavolo nella Stanza 124, utilizzando oggetti e materiali di scarto portati da casa. Tale costruzione è quindi strutturata come un disegno collettivo, come un esercizio di dopo-architettura. Il disegno esibito è il risultato della forma improvvisata e assemblata. Da lunedì 28 luglio, a sabato 2 agosto * *Guestbook: Mind-mapping The Rest of Now* Open Anonymous Society, Berlin Open Anonymous Society (OAS) riunisce un gruppo temporaneo ed eterogeneo di artisti che vivono a Berlino. OAS considera le reazioni, di solito private e inespresse, di comuni visitatori di eventi artistici come “residuo” delle mostre d’arte contemporanea. Guestbook: Mind-mapping The Rest of Now sollecita delle risposte dai visitatori di The Rest of Now sotto forma di annotazioni, commenti, riflessioni, disegni e diagrammi che verranno riportati su una “mappa mentale” – uno schema di collegamenti concettuali e delle relative interpretazioni – da esibirsi nella Stanza 124. Da domenica 3, a sabato 9 agosto * *Radio Symphony: listening to global radio with local short-wave enthusiasts* Una “sinfonia radio” è una forma orchestrale accidentale generata dalla sintonizzazione simultanea su varie stazioni radio. Ventiquattro radio transistor sono sistemate sul tavolo, ognuna sintonizzata su bassa frequenza e collegata a una stazione radio in qualche parte del mondo. Per ognuno dei cinque giorni del progetto è prevista una diversa lista di stazioni. Camminando lungo il tavolo si ha la percezione di sintonizzarsi su una radio gigante: il visitatore è immerso in un concerto mutevole di suoni, voci, lingue, musica, un silenzio immobile dalle radio di tutto il mondo. Attraverso un contatto diretto con il pubblico, l’artista Milena Kosec esplora temi quali le relazioni interpersonali, la casualità, l’immaterialità, l’unicità di un momento, e la non-ripetibilità. Nelle sue performance, Milena coinvolge visitatori scelti a caso, con i quali riveste il ruolo di ascoltatrice, costruendo un dialogo personale caratterizzato da spontaneità e sincerità. Senza note o documentazione, le uniche tracce lasciate da queste conversazioni restano nella sfera delle memorie personali. Giovedì, 11 settembre, ore 18 * *Building Instruments: The Bolzano / Bozen Sessions* With Espen Sommer Eide, Bergen Espen Sommer Eide, artista, musicista e filosofo che vive a Bergen, ha sviluppato un metodo per la costruzione collettiva di strumenti improvvisati per la musica elettronica, usando dischi per grammofono, giradischi, pezzi di amplificatori, sub-woofers, ecc. Il processo di creare gli strumenti prosegue con la creazione della musica stessa. Nel corso di The Bolzano / Bozen Sessions, Sommer Eide costruisce gli strumenti per fare musica sopra e attorno al lungo tavolo insieme ad amici, amanti della musica acustica ed estimatori della musica elettronica provenienti dalla regione. Lo scopo è evidenziare dei concetti chiave che giocano un ruolo significativo nelle discussioni attuali sulla guerra, oltre a quelli che finora non sono stati considerati o non sono ancora stati creati. In due anni di lavoro e cinque edizioni a Francoforte, Monaco, Graz, Berlino e Novi Sad sono stati sviluppati 125 progetti. Residual Hopes: Table-Top Theatre Weekend offre due performance serali in lingua italiana a cura del gruppo di produttori culturali trentino Il Funambolo. Due piece che puntano l’attenzione al testo. Sabato sera Tabula Rasa farà da palcoscenico a falling to pieces / cadendo a pezzi. Nell’estate del ’59 William Burroughs e Brion Gysin cominciano ad applicare alla propria scrittura il cut-up method sulla scia di sperimentazioni artistiche come il ready made duchampiano e il collage dadaista, la musica di John Cage e la scrittura automatica di Tristan Tzara; si tratta di scomporre in frammenti un testo e di ricombinarne l’ordine casualmente, oppure di mescolare i frammenti di più testi fino a renderli un’unica opera. falling to pieces/cadendo a pezzi è un’improvvisazione che sperimenta con il cut-up method su un testo letterario – il confronto fra O’Brien e Winston Smith in 1984 di George Orwell – e sullo standard jazz A Night in Tunisia di Dizzy Gillespie. Il testo e lo spartito vengono tagliati dal vivo e rimontati casualmente in un dialogo/scontro fra voci e linguaggi differenti che danno vita a una composizione del tutto originale. Con la partecipazione di Andrea Caltran (voce), Stefano Carloni (sax), Tiziana Poli (camera 1), Guido Laino (camera 2) e Marco Furgeri (luci). Domenica sera in “Avrei preferenza di no”, disse. invece le speranze residue si condensano nel rifiuto irriducibile di Bartleby. “Bartleby ricava dalle macerie un tratto d’espressione, I WOULD PREFER NOT TO, che prolifererà su se stesso, contaminerà gli altri, metterà in fuga l’avvocato, ma metterà in fuga anche il linguaggio, farà crescere una zona di indeterminazione o di indiscernibilità tale che le parole non si distinguono più, e meno ancora i personaggi, con l’avvocato in fuga e Bartleby immobile, pietrificato. L’avvocato incomincia a vagabondare mentre Bartleby resta tranquillo; ma è perché resta tranquillo e non si muove, che Bartleby sarà trattato come un vagabondo.” (Gilles Deleuze, Bartleby o la formula).
