In the spring of 2005, Nico Dockx and Helena Sidiropoulos were wandering around the Teufelsberg (an artificial hill made from the rubble of Nazi architecture demolished during the Second World War) in Grunewald Forest when they encountered a “ghost” building – appearing, disappearing and reappearing in between trees and clouds. Their first impressions were of a scientific laboratory.
“We eventually found out it was a former NSA listening station abandoned by the Americans after the fall of the Berlin Wall. We approached the Berlin Senate for permission to enter this secure zone that had become overgrown by nature. We visited the site on several occasions, inviting a number of friends to participate in our space/time odyssey: Douglas Park, Jochem Vanden Ecker, Jan Mast, Rik Desaver, Kris Delacourt, Friedrich Meschede, Nataša Petrešin, Stephen Kovats, Anri Sala, Rut Blees Luxemburg, Krist Torfs and Ruth Rosenfeld. These people have become a temporary, spontaneous “research group” (buildingtransmissions.info) around this meditative and speculative architecture at the Teufelsberg, perhaps questioning the appearance of what is not entirely there.” TEUFELSgroup
