Shahid Amin is professor of history at the University of Delhi, India. Specializing in Subaltern Studies, an alternative approach towards the writing of history whereby the experiences and perspectives of the subordinated majorities are reclaimed, he has been a regular visiting professor at major European universities, participating in numerous symposia and panel discussions. His most recent publications include Event, Metaphor, Memory: Chauri Chaura, 1922–1992 (1995) and Writing Alternative Histories: A View from India (2002), a study of the complex relationship between peasant politics and nationalism, and the interplay between memory and history. For Scenarios he contributes a text concerning the destiny of words – their silences and dominant certitudes, meanings and ambiguities, in region, society and history.
