Randomness, chance and approximation constitute the preferred attributes and thoughts in the work of Miks Mitrevics. Open narratives function as readily available tools, a combination of exposure, interaction and immediate context. His monumental, though intimate, installation Collection of Persons is a semi-autobiographical study of the idea of belonging. It consists of chapters (partial installations, executed in various forms of video, sound and environment-like arrangements), providing stories about people who the artist has seen and encountered in real life and now remain in his mind as an after-image and a memory imprint. Mitrevics blurs the boundary between reality and fiction, while allowing a memory to process its factual and imaginative powers independently. Forgotten or remembered, these people act as a creative impulse. Beyond their comprehension and knowledge, they trigger stories that idealize and glorify simple, seemingly banal, moments. They each perform a ritual whose original meaning is hidden by the subsequent mythology ascribed to each person. Miks Mitrevics’ Collection of Persons is a crowded laboratory of subjectivity, a life narrated with the voice of a passionate storyteller.
