FORTEZZA/FRANZENSFESTE

Since its foundation in 2005 by Bianca Elzenbaumer and Fabio Franz, the artist collective Brave New Alps has worked in response to the continuing destruction of the Alpine region by the industry of mass tourism. In order to inform and involve local population and visitors alike, Elzenbaumer and Franz actively encourage an alternative, more sustainable, approach towards touristic commodities. Recent projects have dealt with the means of traffic, the social stratification of leisure, the staging of nature (artificial snow) and the politics of sightseeing (a free independent travel guide to East Jerusalem, with Alessandro Petti, Sandi Hilal and Eyal Weizman). In collaboration with the municipality of Fortezza / Franzensfeste, Brave New Alps developed a special project for the Manifesta 7 exhibition at the fortress: a display of the Fortezza community’s research efforts and dialogue. Revolving around the development of the village, the subjects include transit as a condition for settlement, modern traveling and the railway, war and bombardment, industrialization and natural resources (the Mussolini dam and the conditions of labor) as well as intercultural co-existence. Appropriating the language of touristic marketing and using the devices of target-group-oriented communication, Brave New Alps scrutinize the ambivalent position of the fortress as a site of cultural heritage, personal reference and economic resource.
