FORTEZZA/FRANZENSFESTE

“Yesterday I attended the ritual demolition of a grand piano staged by the Cologne-based composer Hans W. Koch. Pure Fluxus-style – there were even two old Fluxus warhorses invited to take part in the feast. The thing that surprised me most was to see how the audience, after the performance, entered the stage en masse and scavenged pieces from the piano wreck. One could imagine the variety of new objects being built out of these remnants: monochords and strange string preparations, decorative items, tables, chairs… Tonight in my dream, the body of the discharged piano is merged with the body of the old fortress. This is the moment where the fortress is freed of its initial function (which luckily it never needed to fulfill). Unlike the phoenix or the piano, in this transition, it will undergo neither violence nor destruction, as destruction and violence (or the violent defense from destruction) were already inscribed in its initial purpose. It is intriguing to think about which new functions this building may acquire in the future. Quite clearly, the building will last longer than any current utilization plan can foresee. As a first step, for Scenarios , it will manifest itself with voices: voices that resonate in the endless caverns, finally bringing them to life, after all these silent years in this quiet valley.” Hannes Hoelzl
